[Financial News] The Prosecution Service has sought a heavy sentence for a Chinese man who was put on trial for fatally stabbing his cohabiting partner with a weapon in Garibong-dong, Guro District, Seoul.
On the 29th, during the final hearing at the Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Division 14 (presided over by Judge Lee Jung-hee), the Prosecution Service requested a 30-year prison sentence for Mr. Kim (62) on charges of murder. They also asked the court to order 10 years of electronic monitoring and 5 years of probation.
On this day, Mr. Kim’s defense attorney stated, "The defendant acted in self-defense as the victim appeared to threaten him with a weapon first, and in the process, he became agitated and committed the act intentionally." The attorney added, "While there is a possibility that the defendant’s actions may constitute excessive self-defense, it should be considered a spontaneous act. We ask the court to take this into account." He further requested, "Given the defendant’s poor health and deep remorse, we ask for as much leniency as possible."
In his final statement, Mr. Kim said, "I deeply regret committing this crime, and I feel remorse every day in detention. If I could go back, I would never have done such a thing, but since it has already happened, I will accept whatever punishment is given."
Mr. Kim was indicted for stabbing and killing a woman in her 50s, with whom he lived, multiple times with a weapon at a gosiwon in Garibong-dong, Guro District, Seoul, at around 3:17 a.m. on July 31. He had reportedly been in conflict with the victim due to suspicions of infidelity, and on the day of the incident, he committed the crime in a fit of rage during an argument.
It was confirmed that Mr. Kim had previously been fined for injuring the victim in June 2023. Just five days before the incident, the victim had called the police, saying, "He is harassing me. I will call again soon," which sparked controversy.
The sentencing for Mr. Kim is scheduled for November 19.
