[The Financial News] On the 23rd, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surpassed the 3,900 mark for the first time ever during trading, before closing at the 3,840 level.
KOSPI ended the session at 3,845.56, down 38.12 points (0.98%) from the previous trading day. At 11:48 a.m., KOSPI rose 16.96 points (0.44%) to 3,900.64, breaking through the 3,900 level. The index continued to fluctuate, reaching as high as 3,902.21 before giving up its gains.
KOSPI surpassed the 3,900 level just three trading days after breaking through the 3,800 mark intraday on the 20th. On this day, KOSPI opened at 3,835.79, down 47.89 points (1.23%) from the previous session, amid caution over the weak New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and renewed concerns about the United States–China trade war. Investor sentiment was dampened by worries over a potential 'bubble' burst and escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China.
The Bank of Korea (BOK) kept the base rate unchanged at 2.50% per annum, as widely expected.
In the KOSPI Market, individual investors bought shares worth 747.4 billion won, while foreign investors and institutions sold 409 billion won and 397.2 billion won, respectively.
Among the top 14 stocks by market capitalization, all closed lower except for Hanwha Aerospace (up 4.17%) and Hanwha Ocean (up 1.89%).
Naver Corporation (-5.09%), Hyundai Motor (-3.45%), Doosan Enerbility (-3.42%), and Celltrion (-3.20%) posted the largest declines.
The KOSDAQ Index closed at 872.03, down 7.12 points (0.81%) from the previous session. The index opened at 874.13, down 5.02 points (0.57%).
