[Financial News] Former President Yoon Suk Yeol has decided not to comply with questioning by the Special Prosecutor Team for the Death of Corporal Chae (led by Lee Myeong-hyeon) scheduled for the 23rd.
On the 22nd, Yoon’s legal team stated, “Due to our court schedules this week, attendance is not possible,” adding, “We are coordinating a new date with the special prosecutor.”
Previously, the special prosecutor team had notified Yoon to appear as a suspect at 10 a.m. on the 23rd for questioning regarding allegations of external interference and cover-up in the Chae case, as well as suspicions surrounding former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-sup’s escape to Australia.
In response, Yoon’s side expressed a preference for on-site questioning by the special prosecutor, but this request was denied.
Special Prosecutor Assistant Jeong Min-young stated at a regular briefing, “We received a request for questioning at the detention center, but our position remains that the investigation should proceed in person.” Regarding Yoon’s refusal to appear, Jeong added, “We are discussing various options.”
Yoon is accused of exerting undue influence on the investigation after receiving an initial report in July 2023 that charged former 1st Marine Division Commander Im Seong-geun with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Corporal Chae. He is also suspected of appointing former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-sup as ambassador to Australia to facilitate his escape, after Lee became a subject of investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in connection with the Chae case.
