[Financial News] Chae Soo-yang, Chief Prosecutor of the Major Economic Crimes Investigation Division at the Changwon District Prosecutors' Office, has been appointed as the head of the joint investigation team looking into allegations of external pressure in customs drug investigations at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office.
According to legal sources on the 22nd, Chae was officially appointed as the head of the joint investigation team the previous afternoon and assigned to the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office. He will oversee both the joint prosecution-police investigation team led by Chief Prosecutor Yoon Guk-gwon and a separate investigative team headed by Superintendent Baek Hae-ryong.
Chae has previously served as Human Rights Supervisor at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and as Chief Prosecutor of the Second Major Economic Crimes Investigation Division at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. In 2018, while serving as Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, he was known for indicting former President Chun Doo-hwan on charges of defaming the late Father Pio Cho, victims, and bereaved families related to the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
