Under the theme '80 Years of Police, Safety for the People! A New Beginning!', the ceremony included a tribute to this year's police heroes and awards for distinguished service.
This year’s police heroes were Inspector Jeon Chang-shin, a former independence activist, and Inspector Lee Gitae, who died in the line of duty while saving a disabled youth.
Inspector Jeon led the March 1st Movement in Hamhung in 1919, later joined the police force, and served as chief of the Incheon Women’s Police Station, where he established a shelter to protect refugees and the vulnerable. Inspector Lee lost his life on Police Day in 2015 while returning a youth with intellectual disabilities to his family. He was struck by an oncoming train while rescuing the youth, who had lain down on the tracks.
A total of 496 police officers, including Lee Mi-kyung, Chief of the Public Safety Division at the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency and recipient of the Order of Service Merit, Red Stripes, received government honors.
The ceremony was attended by the families of this year’s police heroes and fallen officers, public safety partners, local police from city and provincial agencies, traffic police, detectives, forensic investigators, riot police, special forces, and new recruits from various departments.
President Lee Jae Myung; Yun Ho-jung, Minister of the Interior and Safety; Kwon O-eul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA); as well as ambassadors, foreign police officials, and representatives from 30 overseas law enforcement agencies visiting for the International Police Chiefs Conference, all attended to celebrate Police Day.
KNPA will also host events such as the International Police Chiefs Conference and the Korea Police World Expo (KPEX) during Police Week, which runs through the 26th.
Jaesung Yoo, Acting Commissioner General of KNPA, stated, "We will follow in the footsteps of police heroes and fallen officers who gave their lives for public safety with noble sacrifice, striving to become the people’s police. We are committed to building a safe and happy Korea where there is no fear of crime or accidents at home, work, or in daily life, and where ordinary citizens do not suffer injustice."
