[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a 'fair trade agreement' between the United States and China could be achieved following talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He mentioned that arrangements are already underway for a visit to China early next year, and dismissed the likelihood of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
On the 20th (local time), after a summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at The White House, President Trump told reporters, 'I have a good relationship with President Xi and will meet him at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju.' He added, 'It will be a positive outcome for both countries.' Trump continued, 'We have reached very fair agreements with the European Union (EU), Japan, and the Republic of Korea (ROK). Now, a fair deal will be made with China as well,' and predicted, 'By the time I leave Korea, we will have forged a very strong trade agreement.'
Although there are still some differences regarding the ROK's $350 billion (about 500 trillion won) investment package in the U.S.-ROK trade negotiations, President Trump appears to consider the agreement essentially finalized, reiterating this stance during the day.
He further stated, 'China has shown great respect for us and has paid enormous sums in tariffs,' warning, 'Currently, tariffs on China stand at 55%, but they could be raised to as high as 155% on November 1.'
He also noted, 'China weaponized rare earth elements (REE), but the United States can respond with aircraft parts and more.' He explained, 'At the time, we halted the supply of parts in response to China's threats, grounding more than 400 planes. Key industries, including The Boeing Company, will serve as our leverage in negotiations. Ultimately, we will reach an excellent agreement with China.'
President Trump also explained that he has been invited by President Xi to visit China early next year, saying, 'The arrangements are more or less set.'
Regarding the Taiwan issue, he remarked, 'China does not want to take such action,' and emphasized, 'The United States possesses the most powerful military in the world, and no one can challenge us. While Taiwan may be very precious to President Xi, the likelihood of actual action is low.' In a previous Fox News interview, President Trump also claimed, 'President Xi personally assured me that China would not invade Taiwan during my term.'
On the Israel-Hamas war, he said, 'For the first time in history, a ceasefire was agreed with Hamas,' and warned, 'If they attack again, we will respond directly.' He added, 'Hamas is no longer receiving support from the Islamic Republic of Iran or any other country. They must behave properly.'
Regarding the Russian Federation-Ukraine war, he commented, 'We are pushing for an agreement, and if not, many people will pay a heavy price.' He added, 'We are working to end the war.'
