[Financial News] The Kim Keon Hee Special Prosecutor Team, led by Special Prosecutor Min Jung-ki, is currently questioning an executive from a contractor in connection with the alleged preferential treatment regarding the change of the Yangpyeong Expressway’s terminus.
On the morning of the 20th, the Special Prosecutor Team announced that it was conducting a summons investigation of Mr. Kim, an executive director at Kyong Dong Engineering.
The 'Yangpyeong Expressway terminus change allegations' center on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) altering the endpoint of the Seoul–Yangpyeong Expressway from Yangseo-myeon to Gangsang-myeon in 2023. It was revealed that the family of First Lady Kim Keon Hee owns real estate in the newly designated area, raising suspicions of preferential treatment. Former MOLIT Minister Won Hee-ryong denied these claims and subsequently scrapped the project. In response, the Special Prosecutor Team carried out searches of MOLIT, Kyong Dong Engineering, Donghae Engineering & Consultants, and other related parties. Investigations also targeted Mr. Kim, an official from MOLIT who was in charge at the time, and another official dispatched to the Presidential Transition Committee of Yoon Suk Yeol.
The Special Prosecutor Team is currently investigating whether the Presidential Transition Committee of Yoon Suk Yeol directed MOLIT to make the change. The team plans to question Mr. Kim about possible involvement by both MOLIT and the transition committee.
