This initiative aims to discover established and veteran directors who have consistently engaged in creative activities within the Gyeonggi Province theater community, providing them with meaningful opportunities to stage their works. It also seeks to expand access for residents to high-quality original plays within the region.
The Gyeonggi Directors Festival is a project that embodies the strategic vision of the 'G-ARTS' brand, which Gyeonggi Arts Center is introducing for the first time this year.
Following an open call in early October, seven works by actively working directors in the province were selected. Starting with Yaegi Theatre Company's play 'Rashomon' at Geuk Yesul Space in Bucheon on the 21st, a total of nine performances will be held through December at six venues across Gyeonggi Province, including Osan, Paju, and Yongin.
All performances are free of charge, ensuring that many residents can enjoy access to the arts.
This initiative is significant as it is designed to address the imbalance between supply and demand in the Gyeonggi Province theater scene.
According to the Korean Artists Welfare Foundation's certification of artistic activities, there were approximately 5,100 theater artists in Gyeonggi Province as of 2025. However, due to budget and staffing limitations, local theaters have struggled to provide sufficient opportunities for productions.
Through this project, Gyeonggi Arts Center aims to strengthen the self-sustainability of the Gyeonggi Province theater ecosystem and establish a regionally circulating creative system.
Sanghoe Kim, president of Gyeonggi Arts Center, stated, "This project provides a practical foundation for local directors to plan and stage their works within the region, while also opening opportunities for residents to enjoy high-quality original plays. We hope this will serve as a catalyst for a healthy, sustainable theater ecosystem unique to Gyeonggi Province."
