[Financial News] The trial of Kwon Seong-dong, a People Power Party lawmaker who has been indicted and detained on charges of receiving illegal political funds worth 100 million won from the Unification Church, will begin at the end of this month.
According to the legal community on the 17th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Agreement Division 27 (Presiding Judge Insung Woo) will hold the first hearing for Kwon's violation of the Political Funds Act at 5 p.m. on the 28th.
The Kim Keon Hee Special Prosecutor Team, led by Min Joong-ki, obtained a detention warrant for Kwon from the court on the 16th of last month and brought him to trial in custody on the 2nd of this month.
Kwon is accused of accepting 100 million won in illegal political funds from Yoon Young-ho, former global director of the Unification Church, in January 2022, ahead of the 20th presidential election. The special prosecutor's team believes there was a request to promote Unification Church-related issues if Yoon Suk Yeol were elected president.
Meanwhile, Kwon filed a request for a review of the legality of his detention, claiming his arrest was unjust, but the court rejected his appeal.
