[Financial News] Acting Commissioner Jaesung Yoo addressed the arrest of former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jin-sook, stating, “Due to the short statute of limitations on election law violations, it was necessary to conduct a swift investigation.”
At the Security and Public Administration Committee audit held on the morning of the 17th, Acting Commissioner Yoo was asked by Park Sumin of the People Power Party, 'Wasn't it unusual to send six summonses to former Chairperson Lee Jin-sook in rapid succession?' He responded as above.
When asked whether the execution of the arrest warrant was carried out solely by the chief of Yeongdeungpo Police Station and the head of the second investigation division, Yoo explained, “I understand that Yeongdeungpo Police Station, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA), and the National Office of Investigation coordinated the matter.” He added, “I was briefed when the arrest warrant was requested, filed, and issued, and I was also informed that summonses were sent during the week.”
He further noted that the relevant details were also reported to the Office of the President of South Korea.
Lee Dal-hee of the People Power Party also focused her questions on the arrest of the former chairperson. She asked, 'Did anyone from the Office of the President of South Korea directly order Lee Jin-sook’s arrest?' Acting Commissioner Yoo replied, “There was no such order,” and emphasized, “The arrest was conducted according to law and procedure.”
Regarding the question of why Lee Jin-sook was handcuffed when being taken to Yeongdeungpo Police Station, Acting Commissioner Yoo stated, “It is standard procedure to use handcuffs when executing an arrest warrant.”
Previously, on the afternoon of the 2nd, Yeongdeungpo Police Station arrested the former chairperson on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act and the State Public Officials Act. However, Lee Jin-sook’s legal team filed a Review of Legality of Arrest with the court, and after the court accepted the request, she was released two days after her arrest.
