The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) announced on the 16th that, together with the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF), it has designated the 21st to the 26th as '2025 Hanbok Culture Week' and will host a variety of hanbok-related cultural events nationwide.
Now in its eighth year, Hanbok Culture Week is an annual event centered around Hanbok Day on October 21. This year, under the theme 'Modern Hanbokpan,' the event will highlight how the traditional beauty of hanbok meets contemporary sensibilities, showcasing the evolving hanbok culture of today.
On Hanbok Day, October 21, commemorative events will be held at the State Council Site Historical Plaza in Jongno-gu, Seoul, including an awards ceremony for contributors to the hanbok industry, a hanbok fashion show, and celebratory performances. The fashion show, themed 'Everyday Play,' will feature six hanbok brands—Kim Hye Soon Hanbok, Tchai Kim, SEODAMHWA, RIU&VIU, Danha, and OUWR. Teams will be formed by senior designers who have preserved tradition and younger designers who reinterpret hanbok with a modern touch.
A total of 36 models, including Stefanie Michova and figure skater Cha Jun-hwan, will take the stage to present the diverse beauty of hanbok. Following the fashion show, the dance team HolyBang, winners of 'Street Woman Fighter' in 2021, will perform in hanbok, blending traditional imagery with contemporary style.
On the 22nd, the National Folk Museum of Korea will host a symposium to support the inscription of 'Hanbok Lifestyle' on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, aiming to elevate the international status of hanbok culture. The launch ceremony for the Task Force for Inscribing Hanbok Lifestyle on UNESCO will also take place. Across various regions, Hanbok Culture Creative Studios in Sangju, Jeonju, Gangneung, Busan, and Boseong County will lead hanbok experience events linked to local cultural resources. Additionally, ten hanbok-themed programs selected through public contests, such as the 'Hanbok Exchange Market' and 'Plogging in Hanbok,' will be held.
Detailed programs and schedules for the 2025 Hanbok Culture Week can be found on the official website.
Choi Hwi-Young, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "Hanbok, which embodies the identity and wisdom of our people, is a living culture in modern daily life and a key asset of K-Culture that draws global attention. Through this Hanbok Culture Week, I hope the public will discover new values in hanbok and that people around the world will experience the depth of hanbok culture."
