Nexon Launches Idle RPG, Expanding the MapleStory IP

Nexon is accelerating its IP expansion strategy by introducing a new idle RPG based on the MapleStory IP.
According to industry sources on the 14th, Nexon has begun global pre-registration for the mobile idle RPG 'MapleStory: Idle RPG,' co-developed with AbleGames. Registration is available on the official website, Google Play Store, and App Store. The company aims for an official global launch, including Korea, in the second half of this year.
'MapleStory: Idle RPG' is a new mobile game based on the MapleStory IP, designed so anyone can easily enjoy the fun of vertical progression without pressure. The game faithfully recreates familiar characters and the world of MapleStory. By combining automatic growth elements with MapleStory's unique systems, it offers idle game players a fresh experience.
'MapleStory: Idle RPG' aims to attract new users by blending the idle growth system with MapleStory's distinctive universe. Nexon's venture into the idle RPG genre reflects its intention to further expand the reach of the MapleStory IP.
Notably, the idle RPG genre chosen by Nexon maximizes 'time efficiency,' a key trend in the current gaming market. Unlike traditional genres such as MMORPGs, which require high levels of immersion and long playtimes, idle RPGs allow characters to grow even when players are offline, making them ideal for busy modern lifestyles. This approach lowers entry barriers for new users and is expected to draw light users in their 20s and 30s who previously enjoyed MapleStory back into the game by evoking nostalgia. Beyond simply launching a new title, this move is seen as a strategy to diversify Nexon's portfolio and extend the longevity of the MapleStory IP.
Previously, Nexon announced its collaboration with AbleGames, a studio recognized for its expertise in idle RPG development. From May to July, the companies conducted open tests in four countries, including Singapore and Australia. According to Nexon, the tests received positive feedback and high re-login rates, confirming strong local interest.
Meanwhile, Nexon is actively pursuing its 'MapleStory IP expansion strategy.' The company is broadening its reach with initiatives such as the blockchain ecosystem 'MapleStory Universe,' the theme park 'Maple Island,' and various offline content including merchandise and concerts.
