This Chuseok Holiday Sees Rise in 'Relationship-Based Crime' Reports to 112, While Overall Emergency Calls Decline

During the Chuseok holiday, reports of relationship-based crimes such as domestic and dating violence increased compared to last year. In contrast, the total number of emergency calls decreased.
According to the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) on the 9th, reports to the 112 Police Emergency Number related to domestic violence, dating violence, and child abuse rose by 12.7%, 21%, and 14% respectively compared to last Chuseok. However, overall emergency calls fell by 4.4%.
During the public safety period over the holiday, the police deployed an average of 26,798 officers per day (a cumulative total of 294,773) to strengthen visible patrols. In particular, 21,199 victims of relationship-based crimes were monitored, and among them, 4,776 high-risk individuals received focused police attention.
The number of night-duty detectives was also increased by 36.6% to 27,966. As a result, police detected 6,593 cases of violent crimes, robbery, and theft, arresting 7,234 individuals, of whom 178 were taken into custody.
Police conducted preemptive inspections at 4,294 locations vulnerable to crime and accidents. Additionally, during the holiday, 12,455 officers were deployed at 90 major festivals and event venues nationwide.
With the National Day of the People's Republic of China overlapping the Chuseok holiday, police expanded safety services for the influx of tourists. The Mobile Patrol Unit was deployed at 421 locations with high concentrations of Chinese tourists, totaling 3,137 officers. The 112 Foreign Language Interpretation Center handled an average of 37.2 Chinese-language interpretation requests per day, supporting tourists in emergency situations.
Traffic enforcement was also carried out. The police focused on managing congestion on homebound and return routes, cracking down on 1,832 cases of drunk driving and 7,445 other traffic violations. There were no major traffic accidents. The average daily highway traffic volume during the holiday reached approximately 5.725 million vehicles, a 3.2% increase from last year.
Jaesung Yoo, acting commissioner of the KNPA, stated, "We concentrated all police resources to ensure a safe and comfortable Chuseok holiday for the public," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to create a safer society free from crime."
