[Financial News] Regulations will be lifted or eased for nine military base and military facility protection zones, covering approximately 4 million square meters—an area 1.38 times the size of Yeouido (2.9 million square meters).
On the 29th, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced that restrictions will be lifted on two limited protection zones—covering 680,000 square meters—in Gimpo City, Gyeonggi Province and Ganghwa County, Incheon Metropolitan City. In addition, one area in Ganghwa County (23,000 square meters) will be downgraded from a controlled protection zone to a limited protection zone.
The MND explained that the limited protection zone designation was lifted for Geolpo District 3 in Gimpo City due to the area's existing residential development, and for the Goindol Park area in Ganghwa County to support tourism and the development of the Ganghwa Hajeom Industrial Complex.
In Ganghwa-eup, Ganghwa County, where restrictions were eased to a limited protection zone, the expansion of nearby residential areas and the protection of residents' property rights served as the basis for the decision.
The MND added, "We will continue to rationally adjust military base and military facility protection zones to improve residents' lives and promote co-development with local communities."
This deregulation follows adjustments made to previously uncoordinated zones during the runway angle change at the eastern side of Seoul Air Base (K-16) in September 2013. The affected areas include seven locations—Gangnam, Gangdong, Gwangjin, Songpa, and Jungnang Districts in Seoul, as well as Seongnam and Yongin Cities in Gyeonggi Province—covering about 3.277 million square meters.
Part of the Flight Safety Zone at Seoul Air Base (K-16) is also included in the deregulation. The Flight Safety Zone refers to an area designated and announced by the Minister of National Defense under the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act to ensure the safe takeoff, landing, and flight of military aircraft.
A military base and military facility protection zone is an area designated by the Minister of National Defense under the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act to protect military bases and facilities and to ensure the smooth execution of military operations.
These zones are largely divided into controlled protection zones and limited protection zones. The former refers to areas adjacent to the Military Demarcation Line or those requiring strict protection of military facilities, while the latter are designated for the smooth conduct of military operations or to ensure the safety of local residents.
Topographic maps and detailed lot numbers for the deregulated areas can be viewed at the relevant local governments and military units. The current status of protection zones for each parcel is also available on Land e-Eum.
