[Financial News] The Kim Geon-hee Special Prosecutor Team (Min Jung-gi Special Prosecutor) plans to emphasize the necessity of detention by deploying 8 prosecutors for the pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant review) of Han Hak-ja, the president of the Unification Church, who is identified as a key figure in the 'religious-political collusion' allegations.
The special prosecutor team announced through a press release on the morning of the 22nd that "This afternoon, a total of 8 prosecutors, including team leaders, will attend the pre-arrest suspect interrogation of President Han and Jeong Won-ju, the chief secretary of the Unification Church President's Office," and "The submitted opinion is about 420 pages, and the PPT is about 220 pages each."
Judge Jeong Jae-wook, in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, will conduct the pre-arrest suspect interrogation of President Han from 1:30 PM and Chief Secretary Jeong from 4 PM. After the interrogation, President Han and Chief Secretary Jeong will wait for the results at the Seoul Detention Center.
The special prosecutor applied for an arrest warrant for President Han on the 18th for four charges: violation of the Political Funds Act, violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, destruction of evidence, and embezzlement in business. Chief Secretary Jeong, who was also applied for a warrant, is accused of conspiracy to commit a crime.
This is the first time President Han, who took office as the president of the Unification Church in September 2012, is facing the possibility of arrest. He is accused of delivering 100 million won to Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People Power Party, through Yoon Young-ho, the former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, and donating several hundred million won to the People Power Party using Unification Church funds.
He is also accused of gifting luxury items such as Chanel bags to Kim Geon-hee through Jeon Seong-bae, known as Geonjin Beopsa, and enrolling Unification Church members as members of the People Power Party to elect Kwon as party leader. However, the charge of violating the Political Parties Act is not included in this arrest warrant application.
President Han refused to attend the special prosecutor's summons on the 8th, 11th, and 15th but voluntarily appeared for investigation on the 17th. However, it is known that he denied most of the charges during the investigation.
The special prosecutor team considers this attitude as a high possibility of evidence destruction. They plan to argue the necessity of detention based on the denial of the allegations of providing 100 million won in illegal political funds to Kwon and delivering the so-called 'gold envelope' after the presidential election, and the possibility of destroying evidence using his position as the president of the Unification Church.
