[Financial News] The Special Prosecutor's Team for Insurrection and Foreign Exchange (Cho Eun-seok Special Prosecutor) is investigating former Minister of Defense Kim Yong-hyun as a suspect to investigate foreign exchange suspicions, including the drone infiltration operation into Pyongyang.
According to the legal community on the 22nd, the special prosecutor team plans to visit the Seoul Eastern Detention Center, where the former minister is detained, to conduct a suspect investigation starting at around 9 a.m. that day.
The special prosecutor team suspects that the drone infiltration operation into Pyongyang by the Ministry of Defense's Drone Operations Command, carried out in October-November last year, was an incident intended as a provocation against North Korea, considering the declaration of martial law on December 3.
The special prosecutor team is expected to question the former minister about the circumstances of the drone infiltration operation into Pyongyang during the investigation that day.
This is the first time the former minister is being investigated as a suspect for foreign exchange charges. The former minister is currently detained and on trial for insurrection charges.
The special prosecutor team applied charges of general treason and abuse of authority by conducting a search and seizure of the former minister's home and mobile phone on the 15th.
The special prosecutor team notified the former minister to appear for investigation on the 19th, but the former minister's side refused, citing reasons such as 'the investigation schedule was notified too hastily, and other trial preparations are needed.'
Afterwards, the special prosecutor team agreed with the former minister's side on the investigation schedule and method, and decided to conduct a visit investigation in the form of an investigative meeting.
