Kim Young-su, First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Yoo Hyun-seok, Acting President of Korea Creative Content Agency, both expressed a bright outlook on the future of short-form, or short-format videos and content.
On the 17th, at the 12th Korea Cultural Content Forum held at The Great Hall, Chosun Palace Seoul Gangnam, Yoo, the Acting President, stated, "Short-form content is not just about short-format content but is exerting a powerful force that is changing the global media environment," adding, "The short and intense expression of short-form draws empathy across generations and cultures and plays an important role in the spread of K-content."
He continued, "Short-form is rapidly changing the way content is enjoyed, creating a new ecosystem that connects consumers, creators, and platforms," diagnosing that "it is expanding its scope of use not only by broadening the global influence of K-content by combining with various genres such as music, drama, and entertainment, but also by extending its reach to related industries such as advertising, commerce, and tourism."
The popularity and influence of short-form are also proven by numbers. According to the '2024 Online Video Service (OTT) Usage Behavior Survey' released earlier this year by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency, 69.6% of users of free OTT platforms like YouTube watch short-form content, and the preference for original short-form content planned and produced in a short format from the start is also as high as 78.6%.
Song Eui-dal, President of Financial News, also mentioned in his opening speech that "The world is now enthusiastic about the original soundtracks (OST) sung in works like the animation 'K-Pop Demon Hunters (Kedeheon)' and 'Golden' 'Soda Pop'," noting that "the numerous short videos, or short-forms, created in connection with these works are proudly establishing themselves as the main drivers of the worldwide spread of K-culture and K-content."
Meanwhile, Kim Young-su, the First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated in a congratulatory speech before the forum, "In recent years, the new grammar of 'short-form content' has dominated the global content market, deeply permeating the daily lives of various generations, including the youth," adding, "The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, as the main department for the content industry, will continue to provide various policy support and public-private cooperation to ensure that K-content can connect widely with the world through the new format of short-form."
