[Financial News] On the 16th at around 9:17 PM, a fire broke out on an intercity bus passing through the Masong Tunnel in the direction of Gangneung on the Yeongdong Expressway in Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do.
As a result, 5 people were seriously injured, and 16 people were slightly injured and taken to the hospital. Additionally, 15 people received treatment on a field diagnostic bus.
The bus on fire was traveling from Incheon to Jincheon, Chungbuk, and it was reported that 34 people, including the bus driver, were on board.
The fire department issued a level 2 response, mobilizing 24 pieces of equipment and 72 personnel to extinguish the fire, which was completely put out by around 10:25 PM, about an hour later.
Then, at around 2:18 AM on the 17th, all 6 vehicles, including the bus on fire, were removed from the tunnel.
Korea Expressway Corporation is conducting maintenance work on the road surface and lighting while controlling the tunnel. The road is expected to reopen around the 19th.
A Korea Expressway Corporation official said, "Maintenance is needed for the facilities damaged by the fire, so the control of the tunnel where the fire occurred continues," adding, "Masong Tunnel consists of a total of 4 tunnels (2 in the direction of Gangneung, 2 in the direction of Incheon), so communication is possible even if one of the Gangneung-bound tunnels is controlled."
The police and fire authorities are investigating the details of the fire.
