"Considering Leadership and Involvement in the Crime"
[Financial News] The prosecution has sought a prison sentence for the leadership of the former Liberty Korea Party, the predecessor of the People Power Party, indicted for the fast track clash incident between the ruling and opposition parties at the National Assembly in 2019.
The prosecution, at the sentencing hearing for charges including obstruction of special official duties held under the jurisdiction of the 11th Criminal Division of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Jang Chan), requested a sentence of 1 year and 6 months for Hwang Kyo-ahn, the leader of Liberty and Innovation (former Liberty Korea Party leader). They also asked the court to sentence Na Kyung-won, who was the floor leader at the time, to 2 years in prison.
The prosecution stated, "We considered the extent of leadership and involvement in the crime, dividing the charges of confining Assemblyman Chae Yi-bae and obstructing meetings."
In addition to them, 27 members of the National Assembly and aides were brought to trial on charges of confining Assemblyman Chae Yi-bae of the Bareunmirae Party in his office or occupying the legislative office, the Special Committee on Political Reform, and the Special Committee on Judicial Reform meeting rooms in April 2019.
At that time, the ruling and opposition parties clashed over whether to put bills on the establishment of the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Office and the introduction of the mixed-member proportional representation system on the fast track, leading to a confrontation. The prosecution brought 27 members of the Korean Party, including Representative Hwang and Assemblyman Na, to trial in January 2020 without detention. Among them, the late Jang Je-won, a former member of the People Power Party, passed away, resulting in the dismissal of the indictment.
