The Samsung AI Forum, now in its 9th year, is a venue for technology exchange where academic and industry experts gather annually to share the latest research achievements in the AI field and explore future research directions. This forum will feature keynotes from global AI experts such as Yoshua Bengio, a world-renowned scholar in the field of deep learning and a professor at the University of Montreal in Canada, and Joseph Gonzalez, a leading authority in language models and AI agent research from UC Berkeley.
The first day of the forum, hosted by the Device Solutions (DS) division of Samsung Electronics, was held at 'The Universe' located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. About 200 pre-invited guests attended the forum, discussing the theme 'Vertical AI Strategy and Vision in the Semiconductor Industry'.
In his keynote, Professor Bengio explained potential risks such as 'human control avoidance' and 'malicious use' that can occur in existing AI models and introduced a new model called 'Scientist AI' that acts as a safety device.
He stated, "The Scientist AI model provides honest answers based on verified facts and data without the intention of mimicking or pleasing humans," emphasizing the importance of Scientist AI technology in terms of safety and accelerating scientific discovery.
In the technical session conducted by Song Yong-ho, Vice President of the AI Center at Samsung Electronics DS division, Professor Kang Seok-hyung of POSTECH, and Professor Moon Il-cheol of KAIST, the latest AI application research achievements and future prospects in semiconductor design and manufacturing were discussed. Vice President Song emphasized, "AI has become an essential tool in chip design and software development, and it will greatly contribute to overcoming the technical limitations of manufacturing complexity in the manufacturing sector."
The second day of the forum, held on the 16th, is hosted by the Device eXperience (DX) division of Samsung Electronics and will be conducted online under the theme 'Beyond Generative AI, Towards Agentic AI'. The keynote speeches on the second day will feature Joseph Gonzalez from UC Berkeley, Subbarao Kambhampati from Arizona State University, an expert in autonomous planning and decision-making in AI, and Stefano Ermon, co-founder of the startup Inception and a professor at Stanford University, who unveiled Diffusion Language Model (DLM) technology. After the keynote speeches, Joo Hyung Lee, Vice President of Samsung Research AI Center, will have a Q&A session with the keynote speakers.
Professor Gonzalez will present research cases on enhancing agent capabilities based on Large Language Models (LLM). He will also introduce the 'Sleep Time Compute' paradigm, where agents perform inference, learning, and planning by utilizing idle time between interactions with users. Professor Kambhampati will share research results on Large Reasoning Models (LRM) to complement the limitations of existing large language models. He will propose major tasks to be addressed in language models, such as ensuring accuracy, adaptive computation, and providing intermediate inference interpretation.
In the technical session, Samsung Research researchers will share the latest R&D achievements, including AI technology for automatic camera color temperature adjustment, efficient large language model learning techniques using knowledge distillation and application cases, on-device technology for embedding large language models in electronic products like smartphones and TVs, and AI technology for automatically generating dubbing voices with real voices. The second day of the forum can be viewed on the Samsung Electronics developer YouTube channel.
Jeon Young-hyun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, said, "This year's forum will be a meaningful time to discuss how AI is changing society and industry and to share wisdom together."
