[Financial News] The Ministry of Justice announced that it has completed the withdrawal of appeals (appeals and supreme court appeals) for the state compensation lawsuits filed by victims forcibly detained at Hyeongje Welfare Center and Seongam School against the state.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 14th, all 52 cases involving 512 victims, which were in the process of 2nd and 3rd trials by the 12th, have been withdrawn, and the state has given up appeals for all 19 cases involving 135 victims that had been sentenced in the 1st and 2nd trials.
Among these, the Hyeongje Welfare Center cases total 49 (417 victims), and the Seongam School cases total 22 (230 victims).
Jeong Seong-ho, Minister of Justice, stated, "This withdrawal of appeals is for the state to acknowledge the human rights violations caused by state violence during the authoritarian period against the long-suffering victims of Hyeongje Welfare Center and Seongam School, and to move towards true recovery and integration."
The Ministry of Justice plans to pay the full compensation amount first for the prompt relief of the victims' rights and will later negotiate compensation sharing with Busan City and Gyeonggi Province. A Ministry of Justice official stated, "We will continue to refrain from habitual appeals in state compensation lawsuits filed by victims of state illegal acts."
