[Financial News]  A man in his 40s, who attempted to murder his girlfriend by hitting her with a car out of anger over a breakup, was sentenced to a heavy penalty in the appeal trial as well.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Changwon Branch of the Busan High Court (Judge Min Dal-gi) announced on the 14th that it sentenced Mr. A, who was charged with attempted murder, to 10 years in prison, the same as the original trial. It also ordered the attachment of a location tracking electronic device for 10 years.
Mr. A was indicted for attempting to murder his girlfriend, Ms. B, in her 30s, by accelerating his vehicle and hitting her at a dock in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam, last October.
Due to this accident, Ms. B flew about 13.7 meters and fell on the road, suffering a skull fracture and other injuries requiring 224 days of treatment.
On the day of the incident, Mr. A tried to persuade Ms. B, who wanted to break up, but when it didn't work, he drank 2 bottles of soju in a fit of betrayal and committed this act.
A month before the crime, Mr. A also attempted extreme actions, such as severe self-harm with a weapon, when conflicts arose with Ms. B.
He claimed that he had no intention of committing the crime and was in a state of mental and physical weakness at the time.
The court did not accept this, considering that Mr. A continued to rush the vehicle even after hitting Ms. B, and committed the crime while drunk after being notified of the breakup on the day of the incident.
The claim of mental and physical weakness was also rejected based on the fact that Mr. A turned the car in the direction Ms. B was walking and accelerated according to his will, and he accurately remembered the type and amount of alcohol consumed at the time.
Judge Min stated, "Mr. A accelerated to the extent that the average speed over a 2.5-meter section was 50 km/h, attempting to kill Ms. B, who was in an unguarded state," and "Ms. B suffered injuries severe enough to pose a significant threat to her life, and her symptoms are still serious, with no significant recovery of damages yet," explaining the reason for the sentencing.
