[Financial News] The Apgujeong-dong Galleria Department Store in Gangnam-gu, Seoul will be reborn as a landmark with a unique exterior, underground plaza, rooftop garden, and more. The exterior will be designed by world-renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick.
Seoul City announced on the 11th that it held the 4th Urban Architecture Joint Committee Subcommittee on the 10th and approved the 'Apgujeong Apartment District Unit Plan Change, Special Planning District Detailed Development Plan' related to the new construction of Apgujeong Galleria Department Store in Gangnam-gu.
The decision on this plan was made to foster the area around Apgujeong Rodeo Station as a future tourism strategic base and to strengthen its commercial and cultural core functions through creative and innovative design.
The site was selected through the 2nd Urban Architecture Design Innovation Project competition held in December 2023. Based on the design of world-renowned designer 'Thomas Heatherwick', a new landmark in Gangnam is expected to be created.
In addition to the main use as a department store, it will provide citizen rest and convenience facilities through shared spaces connected to the underground plaza, indoor and outdoor public spaces on the lower floors, mid-level gardens, and rooftop gardens.
In addition, it plans to install and provide cultural complex facilities such as a design center as a public contribution of this project by utilizing the site of Cheongdam High School, which is scheduled to be relocated in 2026.
Changsoo Lim, Seoul City Future Space Planning Director, expected, “It will be possible to inject new vitality through the creation of a new landmark with a unique design and the opening of citizen shared spaces for regional linkage."
