[Financial News] The government has set a goal to overcome the structural crisis in the manufacturing industry by applying artificial intelligence (AI) to the manufacturing industry field to create more than 100 trillion won in added value by 2030. To this end, over 1,000 domestic companies, research institutes, and academia have united.
On the 10th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly launched the 'Manufacturing AX Alliance (hereinafter M.AX Alliance)' at the Westin Chosun in Jung-gu, Seoul.
The Ministry of Industry stated, "Our country holds the world's top manufacturing companies, yet lacks globally competitive AI companies. Cooperation between manufacturing and AI companies is also at a weak level," and added, "To promote cooperation, we will focus on supporting R&D budgets, funds, and infrastructure that match corporate demand."
Currently, manufacturing data essential for AI model development is managed only at the level of individual manufacturing companies, so the development of new products and services equipped with AI is slow. Some manufacturing companies are pursuing collaboration with overseas AI companies. To overcome this, the plan is for representative manufacturing companies and AI companies in each industry to participate together.
Additionally, parts and materials companies will also participate to jointly develop AI models and AI products specialized for each industry. The government will focus on supporting R&D budgets, funds, and infrastructure tailored to corporate demand. Unlike the private sector-centered United States and the government-centered China, our unique public-private manufacturing AX alliance is being launched.
The 10 alliances are composed of sectors such as △AI Factory △AI Manufacturing Service △AI Distribution & Logistics △Autonomous Vehicles △Humanoids △Autonomous Ships △AI Home Appliances △AI Defense △AI Bio △AI Semiconductors. Each sector will share data and promote joint technology development with representative manufacturing companies, AI specialized companies, parts and materials companies, universities, and research institutes. Minister of Industry Kim Jeong-gwan and Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Choi Tae-won will serve as co-chairs to lead public-private cooperation.
To support this, the next year's AI-related budget of the Ministry of Industry will be allocated as much as possible to major projects within the alliance. The Ministry of Industry's AI budget proposal for next year, which passed the Cabinet meeting last month, has doubled to 1.1347 trillion won from this year's 565.1 billion won. In addition, to support projects, companies will be able to use funds such as the National Growth Fund and various public-private funds by actively consulting with related ministries and financial institutions.
The alliance plans to actively support demonstration spaces at manufacturing sites, virtual simulation environments, and testbeds tailored to industry and product characteristics for joint use by companies within the alliance.
Minister of Industry Kim Jeong-gwan said, "The voluntary participation of over 1,000 representative companies in the alliance is due to the urgent recognition that Manufacturing AX is a matter of corporate survival," and expressed his ambition, "Based on our manufacturing competitiveness, we will maximize synergy between companies to become the number one Manufacturing AX nation by 2030."
