[Financial News] Shin Beom-cheol, former Vice Minister of Defense, appeared at the special prosecutor's team for Private Chae (Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon) and said, "I think the truth must be revealed for our country and the military."
Former Vice Minister Shin appeared at the special prosecutor's office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, at around 9:54 a.m. on the 10th and stated, "I will tell all the facts I know and will sincerely participate in the investigation."
He also expressed his condolences and sympathy to the deceased and the bereaved families.
However, when asked by the press whether he told former Marine Corps Commander Kim Gye-hwan over the phone to remove the suspect's charges, whether he knew about the involvement of the presidential office in retrieving investigation records, or whether the president instructed the punishment of Colonel Park Jeong-hoon, he shook his head or only replied, "The truth will be revealed later."
Former Vice Minister Shin is being investigated as a suspect for abuse of authority and obstruction of the exercise of rights from 10 a.m. on the same day. He is suspected of being involved in reducing the identification of high-ranking Marine Corps officials, including former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun, as suspects in the death of Private Chae in July 2023. He is also known to have been involved in the controversy by being linked to the retrieval of the Private Chae case records, which were transferred to the police, while communicating with former President Yoon Seok-yeol at that time.
The special prosecutor's team is expected to question former Vice Minister Shin about the circumstances of his communication with former President Yoon. Further investigations are scheduled for the 11th, and additional investigations are expected to be conducted in the future.
