Investigation Likely Related to Former Chief Prosecutor Kim Sang-min's Painting Allegations
[Financial News] The special prosecutor team for Kim Geon-hee (Min Jung-gi, special prosecutor) plans to summon and investigate Kim Jin-woo, the brother of Mrs. Kim Geon-hee.
The special prosecutor team announced on the 10th that they had notified Mr. Kim of a summons investigation at 1:30 PM on the 11th. Initially, Mr. Kim's side expressed intention to attend, but on the morning of the 10th at around 9:15 AM, they conveyed that attendance would be difficult due to the lawyer's circumstances.
The special prosecutor team seems to have called Mr. Kim to investigate the 'bribery allegations' of former chief prosecutor Kim Sang-min. Former prosecutor Kim was summoned for the first time as a suspect for violating the Political Funds Act the previous day, and after the investigation, he told reporters, "The painting was not owned by me, but I only mediated it at Mr. Kim's request," and "I do not know the source of the funds, and it was money received from Mr. Kim."
Former prosecutor Kim was pointed out as the person Mrs. Kim Geon-hee intended to nominate for a parliamentary seat ahead of last year's general election. The main point of the suspicion is that Mrs. Kim intervened to have former prosecutor Kim run for the constituency of former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-seon in Changwon, Gyeongnam.
Myung Tae-gyun claims that Mrs. Kim said to support former prosecutor Kim, who suffered from the Cho Kuk investigation, so that he could be elected in the constituency, and that she implied offering a minister or public corporation president position after the election. However, former prosecutor Kim was cut off in the party's primary and moved to a legal advisor position at the National Intelligence Service in August last year. The special prosecutor team is looking into whether specific influence was involved in the nomination and public office appointment process.
To investigate the allegations, the special prosecutor team searched former prosecutor Kim's residence on July 8 and launched a forced investigation into the National Intelligence Service on the 18th of the same month. They also searched former prosecutor Kim's local residence the previous day.
The special prosecutor team plans to investigate whether Mrs. Kim demanded a painting as a reward for the nomination, suspecting that the source of the painting 'From Point No.800298' by artist Lee U-hwan found at Mr. Kim's mother-in-law's house is former prosecutor Kim. Mrs. Kim's side reportedly stated, "I would not have bought such a painting."
