Following Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon, Damage Reports Continue, Police Merge Investigation
[Financial News] Reports have been received that tens of thousands of won were deducted through micro-payments on mobile phones of users using KT lines in Bucheon. As similar types of damage increase in adjacent areas following Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon, the scope of the investigation has expanded.
According to Bucheon Sosa Police Station on the 10th, five complaints related to KT customer micro-payment damage were received between the 5th and 7th, and the confirmed damage amount totals 4.11 million won, including the recharge of mobile gift certificates worth 730,000 won.
It was identified that among the five victims, four reside in Bucheon Sosa-gu, and one resides in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi.
In Bupyeong, Incheon, a user of a budget phone using the KT network claimed that 275,000 won was deducted, and there were also reports of unauthorized login attempts to KakaoTalk accounts and attempts to pay for gift certificates worth 500,000 won.
The police explained that in the case of Bupyeong, an official report has not yet been filed, so they are verifying the facts.
In Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, five similar types of reports were received on the 21st of last month, and the damage amount was identified as 2.4 million won.
In Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon, 74 cases of KT user micro-payment damage have been collected since the 26th of last month until the previous day, with the accumulated payment amounting to 45.8 million won.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency is merging the Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon cases for investigation and is also looking into damage information in adjacent areas such as Bucheon and Gwacheon.
