[Financial News] The police will dispatch a delegation to Japan to investigate a terror threat case involving impersonation of a Japanese lawyer.
The National Police Agency announced on the 9th that a delegation led by the Cyber Investigation Review Officer (Senior Superintendent) will visit the Japanese National Police Agency for three days starting from the 10th.
The delegation consists of five members, including the head of the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the investigation team in charge. They will discuss practical cooperation measures with the Japanese investigative authorities.
The case involves sending threatening faxes and emails claiming explosives were installed in schools or city halls under the name of a Japanese lawyer, with a total of 51 cases occurring from August 2023 to last month. The means of threat included 19 emails and 32 faxes. Last month alone, there were 10 cases, including 9 faxes and 1 email.
The police are facing difficulties in tracking down the sender located overseas. They are proceeding with international criminal police cooperation (Interpol) and mutual legal assistance, and communicating with law enforcement agencies in the United States and Japan. Most cases where the sender was located domestically have been apprehended.
Hong Seok-ki, the Cyber Investigation Review Officer of the National Police Agency, stated, "With the recent frequent terror threats increasing public anxiety and social disorder, we will focus our investigative efforts on swiftly apprehending the suspect."
