[Financial News]  A middle school student who killed his foster mother, who raised him since he was abandoned as a baby in an alley, has been brought to a citizen participation trial.
Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Kim Song-hyeon) held a public trial for Kim (15) on charges of murder on the 8th.
Kim is accused of assaulting and strangling his foster mother A (64) to death at their home in Imhoe-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam, around 6:30 PM on January 29.
According to the indictment, A took in Kim, who was abandoned near her home on September 1, 2010, and raised him like her own child without going through adoption procedures.
On the day of the incident, Kim committed the crime in a fit of anger after being verbally abused and assaulted by A, who called him "useless."
Kim's defense admitted all the charges but appealed for leniency, citing the repeated mental and physical abuse Kim suffered during his upbringing, which led to the tragic incident.
Kim also expressed remorse in a letter submitted to the court, stating, "I lost the person I love the most by my own hands."
The jury plans to review appropriate sentencing.
A citizen participation trial is a criminal trial in which ordinary citizens participate as jurors (7 members) or alternate jurors (1 member), and the jury's verdict has only advisory effect.
