[Financial News] Regarding the incident where over 300 of our nationals were arrested at a battery factory construction site in Georgia, USA, the People Power Party urged President Lee Jae-myung on the 7th to answer whether it is related to the recent special prosecutor's search of a U.S. military base. The question is whether the Georgia incident is an expression of dissatisfaction by the Donald Trump administration towards Korea.
Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of the People Power Party, held an emergency meeting related to the Georgia incident at the National Assembly on this day and demanded, "President Lee must directly answer whether the sudden search of the military base, the relationship with China or North Korea, and President Trump's strong expression of regret are unrelated."
The Internal Affairs and Special Prosecutor searched the Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province last July. Although the target was the Central Air Defense Control Center (MCRC) of our Air Force, controversy arose because it is a base jointly used by the U.S. Forces Korea. President Trump also expressed regret about this before the Korea-U.S. summit last month.
Leader Jang said, "There is a fundamental question of why now and why in this manner. It is the strongest form of diplomatic dissatisfaction expressed by the U.S. towards Korea," adding, "Instead of sending Foreign Minister Cho Hyun if necessary, President Lee should immediately call President Trump and resolve the issue directly."
He also announced plans to directly demand the resolution of the Georgia incident at the meeting scheduled with President Lee on the 8th and to send party-affiliated lawmakers to the U.S.
Floor Leader Song Eon-seok cited as evidence of possible U.S. dissatisfaction, "President Trump said, 'I am not aware of the immigration authorities doing their job' regarding this incident, which feels like President Lee saying, 'The special prosecutor's search is not under my authority.'" He also pointed out, "On the 3rd, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, ranked second in hierarchy, attended the Chinese Victory Day parade with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un."
Floor Leader Song further urged, "The government should take this opportunity to negotiate visas with the U.S. to resolve the issue," mentioning that Australia and Singapore have negotiated with the U.S. to establish visa types for investment in the U.S.
Meanwhile, the presidential office announced that negotiations for the release of detained nationals were completed on this day and that they would be repatriated after procedures. The cause of the mass arrest incident demanded by the People Power Party and the resolution of visa issues for future investment in the U.S. have not yet been addressed.
