[Financial News] In just two days, there have been consecutive accidents where workers fell and were killed or seriously injured at construction sites in Seoul and the metropolitan area. The repeated 'falling accidents' are a representative type of disaster at construction sites, and the safety management responsibilities of the government and companies are under scrutiny.
According to the Incheon Fire Department on the 4th, at around 1:49 PM the previous day, Mr. A (61), who was working on roof panels at a new villa construction site in Ganghwa-eup, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, fell from the 5th floor rooftop to the 4th floor.
In this accident, Mr. A was seriously injured in the head and other areas and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
On the same day, at around 10 AM, Mr. B, a man in his 50s, also fell at a new apartment construction site in Yongdap-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
It was reported that Mr. B had the accident while installing formwork on the exterior wall from the 15th floor of the construction site. Mr. B was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest.
A day earlier, at around 9:30 AM on the 2nd, Mr. C, a man in his 60s, fell from the 5th floor of a construction site to the basement 1st floor at a villa construction site in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu. Mr. C was transported to the hospital but ultimately died.
In the case of Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, a worker cleaning windows fell and died from a height of 3-4 floors of a multi-family house at around 10 AM the previous day.
The police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are investigating the detailed circumstances of the accidents and any violations of the Serious Accident Punishment Act.
Falling is considered one of the three major types of accidents along with being caught and being hit. Among the 589 fatalities from accidents subject to disaster investigation last year, 227 (38.5%) lost their lives due to falling accidents.
As falling accidents continue to occur this year, special caution is required. Last month, a worker in his 50s died after falling from a height of about 6 floors at a new apartment construction site in Singok-dong, Uijeongbu-si, Gyeonggi-do, and in the same month, a 70-year-old Chinese national fell to his death from scaffolding 6 meters high while welding at a single-family house construction site in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 1st that from next month, if any violations are found during industrial site safety inspections, they will take immediate legal action without corrective orders.
