[Financial News] The Rebellion and Foreign Affairs Special Prosecutor Team (Cho Eun-seok Special Prosecutor) has launched a compulsory investigation into former National Power Party Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho and National Power Party Assemblyman Jo Ji-yeon regarding suspicions of interference in the vote to lift the 12.3 emergency martial law.
Special Prosecutor Park Ji-young announced in a press briefing at the Seoul High Prosecutor's Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 2nd, that a search and seizure is underway at the home of former Floor Leader Choo in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, his constituency office in Dalseong-gun, Daegu, and his office in the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul. Former Floor Leader Choo is currently a defendant.
Special Prosecutor Park also added, "A search and seizure warrant has been issued for the National Power Party's floor leader's office concerning former Floor Leader Choo's actions and decision-making on the day of the emergency martial law."
The special prosecutor team is investigating suspicions that former Floor Leader Choo, at the request of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, changed the location of the National Power Party's general assembly several times, thereby obstructing the National Assembly's vote to lift martial law.
Former Floor Leader Choo is suspected of having changed the venue of the general assembly three times in the order of 'National Assembly→Party Headquarters→National Assembly→Party Headquarters' immediately after martial law was declared, causing a majority of National Power Party members to abstain from voting. In fact, only 18 out of 108 National Power Party members participated in the National Assembly's vote to lift the emergency martial law.
Former Floor Leader Choo is also suspected of having a phone call with former Prime Minister Han Deok-soo for about 7 minutes while moving to the National Assembly at around 11:12 PM on the day martial law was declared. The special prosecutor team believes it is possible that discussions were held in the call regarding the actions and positions the National Power Party should take.
Special Prosecutor Park stated regarding the evidence of former Floor Leader Choo's charges, "It seems that it has been sufficiently substantiated to the extent that a search and seizure warrant was issued," and "that level of investigation has been sufficiently conducted."
The special prosecutor team is also attempting to conduct a search and seizure of Assemblyman Jo's office as a reference. Assemblyman Jo was one of the members gathered in the former floor leader's office instead of the main hall during the National Assembly's vote on the emergency martial law lifting proposal.
Special Prosecutor Park explained, "Assemblyman Jo was included because he had a call with Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun at that time. No other members are included."
He continued, "A mobile phone search and seizure was conducted on a secretariat staff member at around 8:11 AM, but they did not enter the residence," and "I reiterate that there is no search and seizure of the secretariat staff member's residence. There is no home search and seizure other than the residences of Assemblyman Choo in Seoul and Daegu," he refuted.
The special prosecutor team is expected to prepare for a summons investigation of Assemblyman Choo by analyzing the seized items and summoning additional members after completing the search and seizure of former Floor Leader Choo.
However, no compulsory investigation was conducted on Assemblyman Na Kyung-won, who received a call from former President Yoon Seok-yeol along with former Floor Leader Choo during the martial law situation. Special Prosecutor Park explained regarding this, "The reason Assemblyman Na is not included is solely related to the logic of the investigation in selecting the office."
The special prosecutor team plans to summon and investigate Assemblyman Seo Wang-jin of the National Innovation Party as a reference regarding suspicions of interference in the martial law lifting vote on the afternoon of the 2nd.
