[Financial News] The accounting manager embezzled tens of billions of won from apartment maintenance fees and squandered it on overseas trips, eventually getting caught. The management office detected this during an internal audit, putting an end to the embezzlement after 6 years.
According to the legal community on the 1st, the Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Lee Seung-ho) sentenced A (57, female) to four years in prison for charges of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.
A was charged with embezzling over 1.4 billion won in 164 instances from November 2017 to January 2024.
Since March 2016, while working as the accounting manager at an apartment in Wonju City, A exploited the lack of clear approval for expenditure documents to divert maintenance fees to accounts in her or her son's name.
According to the indictment, A used the money for personal debt repayment, overseas trips, credit card payments, and living expenses.
In early last year, the management office conducted an internal audit and discovered suspicious circumstances of embezzlement, leading to A's report.
The investigative agency analyzed transaction details submitted by the management office and uncovered A's embezzlement, leading to her arrest and indictment.
In court, A claimed that she received money pre-spent for the apartment or used it for operating expenses, denying most of the charges, saying she had no intention of illegally taking the money.
However, the court recognized about 90 million won as not guilty and judged the remaining 1.3 billion won as guilty.
The court explained the sentencing reason, stating, "The degree of breach of trust is significant as 1.3 billion won was embezzled over about 6 years," and "Most of the damage has not been recovered, and the apartment residents are pleading for severe punishment."
