Korean Climate Solution Competition... Government's Commitment to Energy Highways
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the World Bank (WB) jointly hosted the '2025 Climate Industry International Expo' at BEXCO, Busan on the 27th, where various AI and small reactor energy technologies from major groups such as Samsung, LG, SK, and POSCO captivated the audience.
In his opening speech, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stated, "With the start of the national energy transition project, the government will actively foster the new climate tech industry and enhance the safety and efficiency of the power grid through AI-based energy expansion."
Samsung Electronics unveiled solutions under the theme of 'Energy Saving through AI', including advanced home appliances combined with AI saving mode, integrated monitoring and management, and building energy management solutions. By applying Samsung Electronics' AI saving mode, power usage can be reduced by up to 60% when using home appliances. A building energy management solution that reduces energy usage by up to 15% was also exhibited.
LG Electronics showcased HVAC solutions such as the system air conditioner 'Multi V i' and 'Multi V S', which apply AI engines. The Multi V i demonstrated up to 7.2% higher efficiency compared to the existing 'Multi V Super5', proving its carbon emission reduction effect, according to LG Electronics. For commercial use, the 'Commercial Stand Air Conditioner', the only product in the domestic 40-pyeong category to achieve energy efficiency grade 1, was also exhibited.
Hyundai Motor showcased an electric vehicle charging robot in the shape of a robotic arm. This technology not only improves convenience but also addresses safety issues related to high currents. POSCO set up an integrated exhibition hall with POSCO Holdings, POSCO, and POSCO International to showcase 'HyREX', a Korean hydrogen reduction steel technology that drastically reduces carbon dioxide emissions by using hydrogen instead of coal as a reducing agent, CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) demonstration technology, and AI-based smart blast furnaces. On-site, the latest climate technologies from a total of over 560 companies, including major domestic and overseas companies, were extensively exhibited.
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok visited booths of Hyosung Heavy Industries, LS Group, Hanwha Q CELLS, Equinor, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Group, and SK Group.
On this day, an energy round table hosted by the Chamber of Commerce under the theme 'AI & Energy' was also held on-site. Ha Jeong-woo, Chief Secretary for AI Future Planning at the Presidential Secretariat, explained, "The government is promoting the construction of energy infrastructure such as next-generation power grids and energy highways, focusing on renewable energy-centered energy transition and synergy between AI and energy." Fatih Birol, IEA Secretary-General, stated, "The global market size of the clean energy technology manufacturing sector is expected to expand to $2 trillion by 2035," adding, "Particularly, Korea has high potential in key areas such as electric vehicle batteries, energy storage systems (ESS), and power machinery, so proactive investment and policy support need to be timely accompanied."
Meanwhile, the event was attended by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, IEA Secretary-General Birol, World Bank Vice President Manuela Ferro, Chief Secretary Ha Jeong-woo, Michelle Patron, Head of Sustainability Policy at MS, Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon, Second Vice Minister Lee Ho-hyun of the Ministry of Industry, Cho Hyung-wook, CEO of SK Innovation, Park Seung-hee, President of Samsung Electronics, Lee Joo-tae, CEO of POSCO Holdings, Koo Bon-kyu, CEO of LS Cable & System, and representatives from overseas companies such as Google and NVIDIA.
