[Financial News] The 50% tariff that the United States plans to impose on India will take effect on the 27th (local time) as scheduled.
According to Politico on the 26th (local time), a White House official, who requested anonymity, stated that there are no plans to delay the additional tariffs on India.
As a result, the tariffs on India will be imposed at a total of 50% starting at 0:01 on the 27th (Eastern Time).
The Trump administration decided to impose an additional 25% tariff on India due to the import of Russian crude oil. This is a second-round sanction aimed at pressuring Russia to end the Ukraine war.
The reciprocal tariff on India is 25%, and with the additional tariff, a total rate of 50% will be imposed.
The two sides have held five rounds of negotiations, but have failed to narrow differences over the reduction of tariffs on American agricultural products and the issue of Russian oil imports. India insists that purchasing Russian crude oil is a purely economic decision and remains determined to continue buying it.
Syed Akbaruddin, former Indian ambassador to the United Nations, told Politico, "It is seen as a blow to the trust in the cooperative relationship between the two countries, beyond a simple trade dispute," and warned, "If left unattended, the strategic cooperative relationship built over the past 20 years could be damaged."
However, an anonymous White House official left room for negotiation, saying, "This measure does not mean the end of bilateral relations."
There is also a possibility that President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet and negotiate during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month.
Kenneth Juster, former US ambassador to India, analyzed, "I believe the Indian government will try to resolve the issue, and the Trump administration likely shares the same hope." He added, "Although this tariff measure may last for a few weeks, I hope the leaders of both countries will hold separate meetings during the UN General Assembly period to normalize bilateral relations."
