Geonjin Beopsa Jeon Seong-bae Denies Charges Instead of Exercising Right to Silence
[Financial News] The special prosecutor team for Kim Geon-hee (Min Joong-gi, special prosecutor) plans to bring Kim Geon-hee to trial soon.
The special prosecutor team stated on the 25th that they plan to indict Mrs. Kim, who is currently under arrest, on the 29th.
The special prosecutor team has determined that they cannot obtain meaningful testimony due to Mrs. Kim's silence and is planning to bring her to trial while she is still detained. Since Mrs. Kim's detention period is until the 31st, less than a week away, the special prosecutor team is focusing on solidifying charges against Mrs. Kim before her indictment through one or two additional summons investigations.
A special prosecutor team official stated, "Since the second detention extension expiration date for Mrs. Kim is this Sunday, she must be indicted before then," adding, "We are considering Friday, but it depends on the unfolding schedule."
Mrs. Kim remains silent and does not speak during the summons investigation on this day. During the third summons investigation, the special prosecutor team is focusing on the remaining half of the 100-page 'Unification Church and Geonjin Beopsa solicitation allegations' that were not covered, and on 'Geonhee2' stored on Geonjin Beopsa Jeon Seong-bae's mobile phone. Mrs. Kim, who was arrested on the 12th, has exercised her right to remain silent in all four summons investigations, including this one. Since denying charges during the pre-arrest summons investigation became a stumbling block during the pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant review), Mrs. Kim's side is interpreted as maintaining silence to avoid giving the special prosecutor any leverage. However, in this summons investigation, the special prosecutor team has excluded the 'Unification Church People's Power Party membership allegations' as they determined there is no direct connection.
On this day, Geonjin Beopsa Jeon Seong-bae, who is also undergoing summons investigation, is denying the charges instead of exercising the right to remain silent. Considering this is the first investigation since Mr. Jeon's arrest, the special prosecutor team is broadly questioning various allegations surrounding Mr. Jeon. It is interpreted that they are confirming unresolved parts from the pre-arrest investigation through this investigation.
The special prosecutor team has announced a summons investigation for Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People's Power Party, in relation to the 'Unification Church People's Power Party membership allegations'. The special prosecutor team believes a summons investigation for Kwon is essential for the Unification Church investigation, as his name was mentioned in connection with receiving political funds from the Unification Church and at a time when the party convention was approaching. A special prosecutor team official explained, "A summons investigation for Kwon is naturally necessary."
Meanwhile, considering the remaining three months of the special prosecutor's term, the special prosecutor team has requested additional personnel from the National Assembly's legislative department to conduct a speedy investigation. Since prosecutors have been withdrawn for the maintenance of public prosecution, additional personnel are needed to complete the investigation within the limited time. Specifically, the special prosecutor team has requested 1-2 additional special prosecutors, 20 dispatched prosecutors, and 40 dispatched public officials. However, since the special prosecutor's term has not yet expired, the special prosecutor team has not expressed opinions on the investigation period and targets.
The special prosecutor team is also investigating Mr. Lee, the head of Cheonsimwon of the Unification Church, Mr. Kim, the chairman of Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation, and Mr. Kim, a director at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, related to the 'Yangpyeong Expressway Endpoint Change Favoritism Allegations'.
