[Financial News] Participants in the riot at the Western District Court, who assaulted a reporter or pushed a barricade towards the police, have been sentenced to suspended prison terms.
The Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 6 (Judge Kim Jin-seong) sentenced Mr. Kim (30s), who was indicted on charges of special injury, special property damage, and special coercion, to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.
Mr. Kim was brought to trial on charges of assaulting a video reporter covering the scene during a protest in front of the Western District Court on January 19. It was also investigated that Mr. Kim threatened the reporter to hand over the camera memory card.
The court stated, "Even if there are political differences and dissatisfaction with the judiciary, they greatly exceeded the line that should be observed," but also noted, "There was no direct damage or intrusion into the court building, and an agreement was reached with the journalist," explaining the reasons for the sentencing.
Additionally, Judge Kim sentenced Mr. Park (40s), who was indicted on charges including special building intrusion, to the same sentence of 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.
Mr. Park is accused of entering the court during the Western District Court riot and pushing a barricade towards police officers confronting the protesters, assaulting them.
Mr. Park was brought to trial on charges of entering the court with a group (special building intrusion).
The court, after reviewing the video of the protest, judged that the scene of pushing the police was the act of another protester and found him not guilty, but acknowledged the fact that he entered the building with many others as guilty.
The court pointed out, "The defendants did not engage in aggressive behavior inside the court, but the act of forcibly entering the building itself was reckless."
