The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 25th that it has completed the amendment of the 'Regulations on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and its Affiliated Agencies' (Presidential Decree) and the 'Enforcement Rules on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and its Affiliated Agencies' (Ministerial Ordinance) for the abolition of the Police Bureau.
The Ministry explained that the amendment containing the abolition of the Police Bureau was approved at the Cabinet meeting on the 18th and will be promulgated and enforced on the 26th, completing the abolition process.
The Police Bureau faced several shortcomings, including internal opposition from the police and a lack of public consensus, leading to ongoing debates about its necessity during its operation.
The Ministry judged that there was sufficient public consensus on the issues with the operation of the Police Bureau and the need for its prompt abolition. Despite being before the confirmation of the new government's organizational restructuring plan and national tasks, the abolition of the Police Bureau was swiftly pursued to ensure the independence and political neutrality of the police.
Even after the abolition of the Police Bureau, major tasks such as support for local police will be transferred to the department in charge before the establishment of the Police Bureau, and will be carried out without disruption.
Minister Yoon Ho-jung stated, "To fulfill the promise made to the public, we have swiftly completed the work to abolish the Police Bureau since taking office, bringing us one step closer to normalizing the police organization," and added, "We will continue efforts to ensure the independence of the police and the realization of democratic control, while supporting the police to become the 'people's police' that serves solely for the safety and happiness of citizens, in line with the national philosophy of the people's sovereignty government."
