[Financial News] The Ministry of Justice has secured the extradition of the leader of a hacking organization from Thailand, who embezzled large sums of money by impersonating the identities of domestic financial magnates, including Jungkook of BTS. The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant after investigation.
The Ministry of Justice announced on the 22nd that it had extradited A, a Chinese national aged 34, who was the leader of a hacking crime organization that hacked multiple websites and embezzled a total of 38 billion won from the financial accounts and virtual asset accounts of domestic financial magnates and other prominent figures, from Bangkok, Thailand to Incheon Airport at around 5:05 AM that day.
A is accused of organizing a hacking crime group overseas, including in Thailand, and illegally collecting personal information by hacking into multiple websites, including telecommunications company websites, from August 2023 to January last year.
The police determined that they embezzled large sums of money by opening mobile phones in the names of the victims and then transferring deposits and other assets from their financial accounts and virtual asset accounts without permission. A method of unauthorized opening of budget phones was used.
The Ministry of Justice stated, "The confirmed victims include many domestic financial magnates, such as famous entertainers, large corporation chairmen, and venture company representatives." It is known that Jungkook of BTS was also among the victims.
The Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Interpol, tracked the whereabouts of the criminal and obtained intelligence that A entered Thailand in April this year, immediately requesting an emergency extradition arrest from the Thai authorities.
An emergency extradition arrest is a system that requests the prior securing of the criminal's custody before formally requesting extradition.
The Ministry of Justice, after close communication with the Thai authorities through the Southeast Asia Cooperation Network and Interpol, secured A's custody in just two weeks.
Furthermore, by dispatching prosecutors and investigators to Thailand last month and continuously discussing the method and timing of extradition with the Thai authorities, they were able to finally extradite A to Korea four months after the emergency extradition arrest request.
The Ministry of Justice announced that through the recently launched 'Overseas Voice Phishing Crime Response Task Force', they will thoroughly track and strictly punish overseas hacking, voice phishing, and online fraud crime organizations. The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant after analyzing the seized items.
