[Financial News] The US joint venture between SK On and Ford, BlueOval SK, has commenced its first commercial production.
BlueOval SK announced on the 19th (local time) that it has started its first commercial production at Kentucky Plant 1 located in Glendale, Kentucky, USA. The 37 GWh capacity Kentucky Plant 1 produces batteries for Ford's electric pickup truck 'F-150 Lightning' and electric cargo van 'E-Transit'. It is also expected to produce batteries for future electric vehicle models of Ford and Lincoln.
Michael Adams, CEO of BlueOval SK, stated, "We are proud to produce batteries that will power next-generation electric vehicles at Kentucky Plant 1, and this production commencement is an important milestone in strengthening our position in the electric vehicle battery market." He further emphasized, "BlueOval SK is creating good jobs in Kentucky, the heart of America."
BlueOval SK plans to hold an event soon to commemorate the commercial production (SOP) at Kentucky Plant 1 with its 1,450 employees and to begin full-scale plant operations. It is reported that over 90% of the employees are from Kentucky, where the plant is located.
SK On and Ford established BlueOval SK in July 2022 and invested a total of $11.4 billion (approximately 16 trillion won) to build three battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee, USA. BlueOval SK plans to determine the operation timing of the remaining Kentucky Plant 2 and Tennessee Plant by comprehensively assessing market demand and business environment.
SK On, which has been operating its own plant 'SK Battery America' in Georgia, USA, can expand its local production capabilities with the start of operations at BlueOval SK Kentucky Plant 1. Ford will be able to secure battery supplies more stably with the plant's operation. As the US Trump administration emphasizes the localization of the battery supply chain, SK On is expected to respond more flexibly to the demands of its future clients with this operation.
Mark Haley, Kentucky Plant 1 Manager, expressed, "We are one team," and added, "Everyone here has played an important role in reaching this day. I am proud of the effort and dedication shown for the success of BlueOval SK."
