[Financial News] The special prosecutor team for Kim Geon-hee (Min Jung-gi Special Prosecutor) has extended the detention period for Mrs. Kim Geon-hee.
The special prosecutor team announced on the 20th that the court had extended Mrs. Kim's detention period until the 31st. Under the Criminal Procedure Act, investigative agencies can detain a suspect for 10 days after a warrant is issued, and upon request, the court may allow an additional 10-day extension.
Mrs. Kim was detained on the 12th for violating the Capital Markets Act (allegations of stock manipulation of Deutsche Motors) and the Political Funds Act (allegations of involvement in Myung Tae-kyun's nomination), and for solicitation under the Special Act (allegations of solicitation by Geonjin Beopsa). Mrs. Kim, who was first questioned before detention on the 6th, has been summoned twice after detention on the 14th and 18th but has not spoken, exercising her right to remain silent.
The extension of the detention period by the special prosecutor team was a predictable step. A representative of the special prosecutor team stated that due to health reasons, the investigation has not been sufficiently conducted, making the extension of Mrs. Kim's detention period inevitable.
The special prosecutor team is expected to accelerate the investigation into the remaining issues, such as the 'NATO tour luxury 3-piece set bribery allegations', 'Butler Gate', and 'Yangpyeong Expressway terminus change preferential treatment allegations'. Mrs. Kim was scheduled for a summons investigation on this day, but submitted a non-attendance notice due to health reasons and is expected to attend the investigation on the 21st at 2 PM.
In the investigations conducted so far, Mrs. Kim has denied most of the charges or exercised her right to remain silent, so the special prosecutor team is expected to decide on whether to indict through subsequent investigations. However, as some of the charges surrounding Mrs. Kim have been somewhat substantiated, the special prosecutor team is expected to proceed with detention indictment first and then conduct additional investigations.
