'Nuna' Shin Yang-sook, Incheon University Professor, Donates Entire Pension
The deceased was a 27th graduate of Seongdong High School and served as the Director of Economic and Trade Affairs at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. During his tenure, he believed that 'knowledge and experience have the greatest value when returned to society.' To put this into practice, he showed special interest in his alma mater and juniors. His sister, Professor Shin Yang-sook, decided to support the studies of juniors by donating the entire pension left by her brother.
Professor Shin Yang-sook said at the ceremony, "My brother used to say, 'It is most rewarding to help juniors work for the country in a wider world,' and I hope this scholarship becomes a stepping stone for challenges and a message of hope beyond mere financial support."
According to the donation agreement, the Seongdong High School Scholarship Foundation selects 5 graduating students each year and provides a scholarship of 2 million won per person. This scholarship will continue for at least 20 years, benefiting more than 100 students in total, and can be increased by up to 500,000 won every 5 years in line with inflation.
The selection is made fairly by comprehensively considering not only grades but also family circumstances and career diversity.
Hong Yeon-pyo, chairman of the Seongdong High School Scholarship Foundation, said, "We will maintain transparent management and strict selection procedures so that the donor's intention can continue for a long time," and "We will ensure that this scholarship becomes a part of Seongdong High School's educational culture, lighting the future of juniors."
Jeong Geun-sik, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, also participated in the ceremony, saying, "This donation agreement is not just financial support, but a bridge of education connecting generations and a meaningful example of the value of the 'educational community growing together' that Seoul education aims for," and "The dedication of the late Shin Seong-won, an alumnus of Seongdong High School, and the heart of Professor Shin Yang-sook, who continued it, give juniors the courage to challenge and achieve, and engrave the value of sharing and solidarity in our society."
