[Financial News] In the treatment of thyroid cancer, which ranks first in incidence in our country, a new surgical method that enhances patients' quality of life is gaining attention.
According to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital on the 19th, the Thyroid Cancer Center at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital Cancer Hospital recently surpassed 1000 cases of single-port thyroid robotic surgery, simultaneously improving patients' quick recovery and cosmetic satisfaction.
Vocal trainer Oh Mo (in his 30s) was diagnosed with thyroid cancer during a health check-up last year. Although he was greatly afraid of losing his voice, he was able to guide singing in front of students again a month after undergoing single-port robotic surgery at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital.
According to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, among the 1000 single-port robotic surgery patients, 87% were women, and 74% were under 40, with a majority being young female patients active in social activities.
Also, 90% of the total were thyroid cancer patients. Although thyroid cancer generally has a good prognosis, the treatment difficulty increases if vocal cord nerve and lymph node metastasis are involved. Therefore, the precision of the surgery and the management of aftereffects are directly linked to the patient's quality of life.
Traditional surgery involved a 5~6cm incision in the neck area, but single-port robotic surgery can be performed with only a 3cm incision in the armpit. There is no scar burden, less pain and discomfort, and it is advantageous for preserving the vocal cord nerve.
Additionally, the surgery time is reduced to about 1 hour, speeding up patient recovery. Even if lymph node metastasis is confirmed, radical resection can be safely performed.
Professor Kim Kwang-soon of the Department of Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital said, “In thyroid cancer, where there are many young female patients, single-port robotic surgery has great advantages in aiding quick social reintegration along with treatment,” and added, “We will continue to provide optimal treatment and quality of life recovery for patients.”
Professor Bae Ja-seong of the Department of Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital emphasized, “Although thyroid cancer generally has good treatment outcomes, a patient-tailored approach that avoids unnecessary treatment while not missing necessary treatment is important,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that young female patients with various roles such as studies, economic activities, and child-rearing can return to daily life healthily after treatment.”
