[Financial News]  A bank employee in his 40s who stole about 400 million won from the bank by hiding it in socks and coats and used it for gambling funds has finally ended up behind bars.
At the Chuncheon District Court, Criminal Division 1, Judge Song Jong-hwan sentenced A (45) to 8 months in prison for charges of occupational embezzlement, it was announced on the 15th.
A, who worked at a bank in Hongcheon, was charged with stealing 212 million won in cash by taking bundles of 50,000 won bills from the bank vault and hiding them in his socks on six occasions in December last year.
He embezzled a total of 391.33 million won by taking 150 million won of bank money stored in his office and about 30 million won worth of 20,000 USD in paper bags and coat pockets.
The investigation revealed that A used the stolen money for online gambling funds.
Judge Song pointed out, "The total amount embezzled by the defendant in a short period is as much as 400 million won, and the fact that only 5 million won out of the 180 million won compensation notice from the bank has been repaid, leaving the rest as the bank's loss, is an unfavorable factor."
He continued, "Considering that there is no criminal record exceeding a fine, a significant portion of the approximately 400 million won embezzled has been returned, several acquaintances are pleading for leniency, indicating clear social ties, and efforts to eradicate gambling, the main cause of the crime, are being made, the sentence was determined."
