[Financial News] A man involved in the rampage at the Seoul Seobu District Court, who opened the entrance and intruded into the judge's office on the 7th floor, has been sentenced to imprisonment.
The Seoul Seobu District Court Criminal Division 5 Sole (Judge Kim Hyung-seok) sentenced Mr. Shin (33) to 4 years in prison on the 14th for charges including special building intrusion.
Mr. Shin was brought to trial for intruding into the Seobu District Court on January 19, lifting the shutter of the entrance on the first floor, and damaging the glass entrance door. Subsequently, Mr. Shin, along with other protest participants, used the stairs to reach the 7th floor where the judge's office is located, kicked the emergency door, and roamed the corridor. According to the judgment, during the process of participants intruding into the court, damage to the building and fixtures occurred, resulting in property damage of about 760 million won, and more than 20 police officers were injured.
Mr. Shin claimed in court that there was no intent to intrude and that the evidence collection was illegal, but the court did not accept this.
The court criticized, "Even while bleeding from an injured hand, he sought the judge issuing the arrest warrant," and "attacking the court in a violent manner because the trial result differs from one's view shakes the foundation of the rule of law." Although Mr. Shin submitted a letter of reflection until just before the sentencing, the court pointed out, "It is difficult to see that he genuinely regrets his wrongdoing."
However, the court stated, "The fact that he is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record and his family petitioned for leniency are favorable circumstances."
