[Financial News] The government conducted a special drug crackdown in the second quarter of this year (April to June), arresting 3,733 drug offenders and detaining 621 of them. They also seized 22,676.8 kg of drugs.
The government announced this at a drug countermeasures meeting held on the 13th, presided over by Yoon Chang-ryeol, head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, with deputy minister-level officials from 15 related ministries, including the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and the National Police Agency.
In this meeting, they discussed △the results of the first half special drug crackdown and the direction for the second half △the current status of major tasks in this year's drug management implementation plan △improvement directions for the '1st Basic Plan for Drug Management'.
The government plans to promote a pan-government special drug crackdown in October and November as well. To block distribution, joint crackdown teams will be formed with the police, local governments, prosecutors, and the Ministry of Justice, focusing on places where drug use or distribution frequently occurs during holidays and festivals.
Additionally, to eradicate distribution routes, they plan to conduct intensive investigations into online platforms like Telegram and offline illegal prescriptions by medical institutions to capture the fundamental distribution origins. To block smuggling, the Korea Customs Service, Korea Coast Guard, and National Intelligence Service will collaborate to intensively block drug import attempts during holiday seasons when overseas travel is expected to increase.
Director Yoon emphasized, "It is very concerning that the exposure rate of the 20s to 30s, who are responsible for Korea's future, to drug crimes is increasing," and stressed the need for a pan-government effort to prevent the spread of drugs to the general public and to win the war on drugs.
