[Financial News] Kakao announced on the 13th that it has beta-opened the platform 'PlayMCP' to discover various model context protocols (MCP) to be used in its agentic artificial intelligence (AI) services and expand the ecosystem.
According to Kakao, PlayMCP is the first case in the country to introduce an open platform based on MCP.
MCP refers to a communication protocol that standardizes the way AI models interact with external data or tools. Just as various electronic devices can be connected with one USB port, AI models can easily exchange data with external systems through MCP. This allows users to handle tasks that meet their needs and purposes in one service without having to move between multiple services.
The opening of the PlayMCP platform is the first step in building the agentic AI ecosystem that Kakao aims for. Kakao expects to enhance the context of the 'Everyday AI' service it aims for with differentiated strengths and to enrich the AI ecosystem by expanding collaboration with external developers.
PlayMCP is an open platform where any developer can participate through a Kakao account. Developers can register their own MCP servers and test how they work in real conversations. They can also freely use other developers' MCPs and tools. Currently, Kakao is supporting various experiments by publicly testing various MCP servers and connection tools such as KakaoTalk chat with me, Talk Calendar, Kakao Map, Gift, Melon, etc.
Yoo Yongha, Kakao AI Agent Platform Performance Leader, said, “The era in which AI deeply understands user intentions and autonomously handles necessary tasks is rapidly approaching,” adding, “PlayMCP will be a playground where developers inside and outside Kakao can integratively experience the planning, experimentation, and execution of agentic AI.”
