According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data, 149.2㎜ of rain was recorded at the Buk-ri observation station in Deokjeok-myeon from 8:14 to 9:14 in the morning that day.
This extreme rainfall occurred because the hot and humid air mass brought up by the North Pacific High and Typhoon Bavi (No. 11) collided with the cold air descending from the north, forming cumulonimbus clouds over a narrow area.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that strong rain would continue, focusing on the central inland and the metropolitan area that day.
In particular, it was analyzed that a large amount of water vapor would be supplied as a 'low-level jet' (a fast airflow at an altitude of 1.5 km) formed in the frontal area of a mid-scale low pressure developed on the stationary front, leading to concentrated rainfall in the metropolitan and Gangwon regions.
Currently, a heavy rain warning has been issued for northern and southern parts of the metropolitan area, and a heavy rain alert is in effect for Incheon.
This is the second instance of extreme rainfall this month. On the 3rd, more than 140㎜ of rain per hour was recorded at Muan Airport and Hampyeong-eup, Gikak-ri in Hampyeong-gun, Jeonnam.
