Independent body to objectively project physician workforce demand
[Financial News] Discussions have begun to project the scale of physician workforce supply and demand in the mid to long term and to establish a basis for determining the medical school quota for 2027.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that on the 12th, the first meeting of the 'Physician Workforce Supply and Demand Projection Committee' was held in Jung-gu, Seoul, where the chairperson was elected and future operation plans were confirmed.
The Projection Committee is an independent deliberative body that objectively projects the demand for physician workforce.
The committee is composed of 15 members appointed on the 31st of last month. According to the Framework Act on Health and Medical Services, 8 members are recommended by supplier organizations such as the Korean Medical Association, the Korean Intern Resident Association, and the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, 4 members are recommended by consumer organizations such as the National Health and Medical Industry Labor Union, and 3 members are recommended by academic societies and research institutions.
The chairperson is elected from among the members recommended by academic societies and research institutions.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare expects that the participation of various stakeholders will ensure the expertise and independence of the supply and demand projections, and increase social trust in the results.
At the meeting, discussions began on models and methods for predicting the long-term supply and demand of physician workforce, as well as assumptions and variables to be applied. Based on this, the committee plans to propose the medical school quota for the 2027 academic year.
Currently, the medical school enrollment quota remains at 3,058, the level before the increase planned for the 2026 academic year. The Ministry of Health and Welfare sees the activities of this committee as forming the basis for adjusting the medical school quota after 2027 and for future physician workforce policy formulation.
