'Immediate Disaster Response Modular' project achievements
[Financial News] Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) announced on the 12th that it has developed the country's first foldable modular system (FMS) housing, which can be supplied within 7 days in the event of a disaster.
Recently, as natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and landslides have become more frequent, the inconvenience and housing performance limitations of existing gymnasium and container temporary facilities have been pointed out. In response, the KICT modular research team developed a foldable modular system that is easy to store and transport, enabling rapid housing support in the event of a disaster.
The newly developed housing is approximately three times larger than the existing Z-type module, measuring 3.2×6.3m, and forms a single household with only two modules. The wall rotates twice to reduce the volume by one-third, and in collaboration with Hyundai Livart, it is equipped with detachable bathroom and kitchen modules. Heating and cooling facilities, as well as electrical and plumbing systems, are built-in, allowing comfortable living in all seasons, and it takes about 90 minutes to install and finish each module.
This technology is the result of the 'Immediate Disaster Response Modular System Development and Supply/Operation System Establishment' project (2024~2025) supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
Director Park Sun-kyu said, "The technology developed this time is for disaster victims who have lost their homes, and it will become a key public technology that helps citizens quickly recover their daily lives by promptly supplying temporary housing facilities with comfortable living performance."
